Smart Shipping Engine for

This client needed a scalable e-commerce platform to sell alcohol nationally to consumers while navigating a maze of shipping restrictions. With laws varying by alcohol type, quantity, and destination—down to the city level—every order posed a compliance risk. I created a binary logic tree that evaluated orders to ensure state, county, and city laws were followed without triggering costly violations or cancellations.

Challenge

Design an intelligent ordering system for an alcohol retailer operating under complex and inconsistent laws across federal, state, county, and city levels. Orders needed real-time validation for alcohol type, volume, shipping destination, and user history to avoid fines and maintain customer trust.

Solution
  • Conducted regulatory research to define key constraints including quantity caps, product bans, and dry zip codes

  • Collaborated with leadership and legal to capture edge cases and codify risk thresholds

  • Developed a binary logic tree to validate orders based on compliance, destination, and timing

  • Created business logic documentation

  • Developed queue logic to preserve over-limit orders for future shipping rather than canceling them outright
